Harry Potter . . . It’s Over, Can We Cry Now?

1

Category : Entertain Me, Movies, Reviews

It is really over – the Harry Potter books, movies, etc. Did the final movie live up to the expectation? I think so! I was lucky enough to see it in 3D, and the theater still had the limited edition Harry Potter 3D glasses, whidh by the way got very fogged up by my sobbing!

It seems with the Harry Pottery Wizarding World at Universal Studios, and all sorts of fan related events, it will never truly die. Even as I write this article, I am on my way to Harvard Square’s Hogwarts Square Celebration. Restaurants will have Harry Potter themed drinks, stores will have events like Quidditch and allow you to brew your own potions. Even the cupcake shop will have Dark Mark cupcakes. Probably the best events to see are MC Kreacher, Draco & the Malfoys and Harry & the Potters, who are all awesome! If you have an opportunity to see any of these bands, do so!

Going back to the final film, I think it really did justice to the book, except for a bit of the ending differing from the book. I was very happy with the portrayal of the characters and was glad to see my favorite character, Sirius Black (Gary Oldman) come back . . . well, kind of. I cried so darn hard during the film. To me, it feels like the characters are family and I am going to miss them! I am really hoping for more once JK Rowling does more work on the Pottermore website.

All of my other loves are pretty much gone, except for comic versions of franchises like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Serenity, Firefly, Angel and more. So I solemly swear I am up to no good, and believe it will continue!

What did you think of the final Harry Potter film? I would love to hear your thoughts, so leave a comment below.

Movie Review – Transformers: Dark of the Moon

1

Category : Entertain Me, Movies, Reviews

Transformers: Dark of the Moon was released nationwide yesterday in IMAX and 3D. In New York, Times Square was shut down for the media circus to celebrate the release in grandiose style, with the red carpet premiere streamed live on the official movie website.  For weeks, the public relations machine has been hard at work drumming up interest in the latest installment based on the popular cartoon series. I headed to my local theater to see if the film would live up to all the hype.

In all honesty, I have been looking forward to Transformers: Dark of the Moon. I enjoy a movie with impressive effects and how can a gal resist big guns and even bigger explosions. Let me be clear, I was not expecting a substantive plot or incredible acting. If the past two films have taught us anything, it is not to hold out hope for a truly great movie. Yet, at the end of the 2 hour 37 minute feature, I found myself disappointed. No, that is not a typo. Transformers 3 times out at 2 hours 37 minutes!

Transformers: Dark of the Moon picks up one year after the end of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Megatron was damaged, but lives on in hiding with a select few Deceptacons. Meanwhile, Optimus Prime, Bumblebee and the remaining 7 Autobots work with the United States government on covert operations to help ensure political peace.  However, the story truly begins in 1959 when a craft from Cybertron crash lands on the moon, kickstarting earth’s space race with the United States and the Soviet Union competing for first contact.

The integration of the US/Soviet moon missions could have been an interesting plot point. However, it becomes nothing more than a vehicle to include archival footage of President John F. Kennedy and President Richard Nixon, along with 2 of the worst impersonations of these presidents I have seen.

Skip ahead 50 years and we meet up with Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf). Freshly graduated from college, his previous adventures with Autobots have earned him a presidential medal and a new hot girlfriend, Carly (Rosie Huntington-Whiteley). Sadly, like so many in today’s tough economic times, Sam has been unable to find a job where he can mean something. While his plight is understandable (how do you go back to being just another person after you have saved the world . . . twice?), it begins to border on annoying.

Sam’s misfortune gives us a device to meet some of the supporting cast, such as Bruce Brazos (John Malkovich) who ends up hiring Sam as a mailroom messenger. Also introduced in Dark of the Moon are Jerry Wang (Ken Jeong), a former NASA engineer who works at Sam’s company, and Dylan (Patrick Dempsey), an investment banker with a penchant for classic cars. Wait, there’s more! The geek set will appreciate some familiar faces/voices, including Alan Tudyk (Firefly, Serenity) and Leonard Nimoy (Star Trek, Fringe). That concludes the spoiler portion of this review. While it is great to see these beloved actors and I hold great respect for them all, the comedic timing seems a bit off and borders on forced.

My main point of contention here is editing. Considering the complete plot, it is an interesting integration of an important time in mankind’s history and the science fiction story now embedded into the memories of most. There actually is a lot of story in Transformers: Dark of the Moon; however, an hour in and few action scenes will leave even the die-hard fans wondering why they paid the $15 to see this movie. Towards the end of the movie, the action heats up, culminating with a full on battle scene unlike any other. Make no mistake, this is an epic fight in the biggest arena possible! Sadly, this battle begins to drag on – almost to the point of wondering if you really care which side wins.

Look, Michael Bay brings an incredible elegance to Transformers. The stunning CGI provides an experience that truly helps bring the Autobots and Deceptacons to life, I doubt anyone would argue that. As always the voice acting is unmatched. Each voice actor allows you to connect with their character. For me at least, is a large part of why I actually enjoy the movies.

I have no doubt Transformer: Dark of the Moon will be the summer blockbuster it is anticipated to be. As for my recommendation, I say wait and Rent It . . . on BluRay, of course. While you wait, you should absolutely check out the Soundtrack because the music is amazing! Watch the video for Linkin Park’s single from the movie, “Irredescent” below.

Movie Review – Thor

Category : Comics, Entertain Me, Movies, Reviews

Total Fan Girl, Nicole Wakelin is armed with her popcorn for another trip to the theater. This time she’s reviewing the latest Marvel adaptation, Thor in IMAX 3D. Find out if Thor is truly mighty.

Once again I have spent a ridiculous amount of money on movie tickets. It’s not enough that the price of a regular admission with soda and popcorn is roughly equal to my mortgage. Now, all the biggest movies are being released in Imax 3D which adds the cost of a car payment to the experience. I end up walking into the theater knowing I may be living in a cardboard box soon and hoping that it will be worth it in the end. This was my mindset when I went to see Thor on Friday night. I really, really wanted to love this movie. I wanted to cheer out loud, knocking over my popcorn as I threw my hands in the air and screamed “For Asgard!”  with the rest of the theater. The Mighty Thor had to meet some mighty high expectations.

See, the thing is, superhero movies are tricky business. The characters are known entities with huge backstories.  They’re beloved by legions of comic fans and if they aren’t treated fairly then everyone will cry foul, loudly. It has to have a genuinehero’s journey tempered with just the right amount of comedy. Not the easiest thing to do when your hero is a guy who swings a hammer over his head like a propeller and flies through the sky. So, I went into the theater hopeful but nervous about what I was going to see. I’m happy to say that Thor lived up to my expectations in every way. The scenes of Asgard in all its glory were beautiful. Thor was wonderfully cocky, only to be humbled into becoming a true hero. There were swordfights and giants and men in black and, well, everything you hope for when you go to a superhero movie. And it had just the right dash of comedy, with our blustering hero getting taken out by a girl with a Taser gun.

Although Thor has a rich backstory, you don’t have to know a thing about him or the Marvel universe to enjoy the film. Everything you need to know is explained as the movie progresses and you’ll love him, and hate him, and root for him through it all. If you are a fan of the Thor and The Avengers, though, you’ll delight in the references made to other characters. There’s even a cameo from Stan Lee (Excelsior!) and if you sit through the credits to the very end you’ll be rewarded with a nice little sneak peek at what the future may hold. I actually enjoyed this so much I ended up seeing it again the next day with my kids because they’ve fallen in love with The Avengers after watching the animated series. My only complaint - it leaves you wanting more and that won’t happen until July when Captain America: The First Avenger hits theaters. Two months should be just enough time to save up my pennies for more popcorn. In the meantime, let me know what you thought of the movie.  Was Thor mighty or meek?

At the Con: San Diego Comic Con with Tron: Legacy

2

Category : Conventions, E-vents, Entertain Me, Movies, San Diego Comic Con

Comic Con. What an experience! Some go for the gaming, some for the cosplay, some for the comics, but I go for the tv and movie panels. For me this year, the most anticipated movie panel was for Tron: Legacy.

It was great starting the Con in the legendary Hall H, the largest venue at SDCC. The first panel (to my mind, the warm-up act I) was for the animated Megamind, and appearing on its behalf were Will Farrell, Tina Fey, and a cardboard cutout of Brad Pitt. The panel was fun and the clips gave us a chance to try out our True 3D glasses, which worked really well even though my seat was not the best. Good to know if you find yourself in a crowded 3D theater.

Next up, though, was what I had been waiting for . . . Tron: Legacy. The panel was moderated by Patton Oswalt, who was entertaining, and whose comment, “it’s been 27 years since the 1st Tron. Those who saw it in the theatre raise your walkers” has now been forgiven.

If you are concerned that TRON: Legacy is a remake, be at ease. It is, in fact, a sequel – a what-happens-next, although “next” is a few decades later. The inclusion of Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner should assuage any fears you may have. If, on the other hand, you never saw the original, get thee to Netflix immediately. TRON is a classic, made in the early days of video games and personal computers. It is interesting to note that, in spite of appearances, no computer animation was used in the making of that film; all animation was hand-drawn, including the “light” on the skinsuits.

The panel was comprised of Director, Joe Kosinski; Producers, Sean Bailey and Steven Lisberger (from the original TRON); and cast members Jeff Bridges, Garrett Hedlund, Olivia Wilde, Michael Sheen, and Bruce Boxleitner.

One of the most interesting bits of info released was that this sequel will include the Jeff Bridges of today interacting with footage of Jeff Bridges at 35. Included in the new promotional clip, which premiered during the panel, was a brief moment with the 35-year-old Bridges, and it appears that in order to make the production appear seamless, they’ve superimposed footage of his face (from earlier footage) onto an actor in the current production. It will “be interesting to see how well this works in longer clips. As with all things TRON: Legacy, I’m hopeful.

Unlike the original, computer animation abounds in this sequel. Although, interestingly enough, the lights in the skinsuits are actually lights, not hand-animated or computer-generated. The look of the movie is, of course, nicely “tech-y.”  The use of True 3D really did add to the experience by drawing you into the environment. So, I would recommend seeing the film in that venue, if possible, or even better, in a newer IMAX theater.

One of the best question-and-answer exchanges of the panel was from a fan to Olivia Wilde (whose character’s motivations are as she says, “ambiguous”). She was asked by an apparently adolescent fanboy if working on a movie about video games made her more interested in video game players. Roars of laughter and cheers. But she replied with an enthusiastic “Yes!” and explained that she really had not played video games in years . . . not since Duck Hunt; but had started playing them again because of the movie and has become a big fan of the games and of the players. She went on to say that she loves Comic Con because the fans are knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and intelligent. She is wise.

The last bit of news is that they are in discussions about re-releasing the original Tron in an “exciting new format.” Any guesses? No further info was available, but hopefully things will be nailed down shortly, to give everyone a chance to see that very excellent movie before the sequel is released.

The panel and the fans were equally excited about the new film, and I cannot wait. Mark your calendars for the US premiere on December 17.

Product Announcement – NVIDIA GeForce GTX 400 series

Category : Conventions, E-vents, Game On, PAX East, PC, Product Announcements

As I waited patiently in the queue line for the NVIDIA Presents panel at PAX East 2010, staff came around to pass out 3D glasses. If nothing else, I knew this panel would be interesting. Drew Henry, GeForce General Manager at NVIDIA, took the stage to introduce the newest GPU series for PC gaming. The GeForce GTX 400 series graphics cards offer 3D Vision to provide a fully immersive gaming, photo and film experience. The improved technology and processing power provides smooth, realistic effects and the interactive ray tracing really amps up the photo-realism.

The crowning achievement in the GTX 400 series is the GTX 480, which boasts as many transistors as 4 Intel Quad-core i7 processors and 2x the performance of the previous GTX 200 series graphics cards. Game releases that will be optimized for 3D Vision include Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Need for Speed Shift, Metro 2033, Mafia 2 and Just Cause 2. The folks at NVIDIA are proud of this latest improvement and are happy to make gaming for the PC more enjoyable for gamers who like to blow things up. With such a large presence at PAX East, they coined this year’s motto: CRANK THAT S#!T UP!

To prove they are more than hype, NVIDIA shared game demos for Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Metro 2033 and Need for Speed, as well as World of Warcraft, to show off the 3D Vision technology. The GPUs will also ship with two built-in games to allow consumers to see what the graphics processor is capable of. Supersonic Sled allows players to set up and destroy a train test track. Zoom in and out of the landscape; create obstacles or shoot things with chickens; players can even view the track construct in a blueprint mode. Also shipping with the GPU is Design Garage, which allows players to create custom cars. Design Garage will show off the astounding detail and accuracy the GTX 400 series cards provide. The GeForce GTX 400 series GPUs will be available for purchase in mid-April 2010. Visit the NVIDIA website for more information about the GeForce GTX 400 series GPU.
