GRID 2: Pushing The Envelope For Racing Games!

The long anticipated wait for GRID 2 is almost over! With its release date rapidly approaching (May 31st) fans of the GRID series of racing games are in for a well-deserved treat. Game development has built upon the original American themed GRID and now game play expands through 40 years of motor sport heritage and across three continents: North America, Europe, and Asia. Of course, the objective of GRID 2 is to develop your driving skills and become one of the top-ranked drivers in the world. There are also many new features, vehicles, and courses added that will allow game-play to be sensational for the PS3, XBOX 360 and PC platforms.

GRID 2 offers a multitude of vehicles, all separated by tier levels. Tier 1 being the introductory – the place where your race career begins. Vehicles in this tier include boosted Japanese sports cars, such as the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, American hatchbacks such as the Ford Focus ST, or classic European tuners, like the BMW 1 series. As game-play goes along, the 2nd Tier vehicles improve in quality. These vehicles include the Mercedes C63 AMG and Ford Mustang Boss 302. The final and most exotic stage of vehicles, Tier 3, includes dream-like machines of the highest class. The vehicles in this group include the McLaren MP4-12C, Subaru BRZ and the Super Touring Class Volvo S60.

Along with the vehicles, styles and locations of game-play have been upgraded for GRID 2. Certain game modes include time attack, world-series racing, and elimination to test your mettle as a driver. The most exciting attribute to these modes are the venues selected by developers for racing. Tracks include the beaches of Miami, the skyline of Chicago, the nightlife of Los Angeles, a run around the Eiffel Tower in the streets of Paris and, of course, the beautiful Cote d’Azur in the advanced levels of game-play. Other European circuits include Brands Hatch and the Red Bull Ring raceway. Many more tracks and road courses throughout the world with great scenery and attention to detail show how GRID 2 pushes the envelope for racing platform games.

The updates to innovations in the game set GRID 2 apart from the competition. The amount and degree of damage a car experiences has been intensified with realistic effects if you decide to trade paint with your opponents. Artificial Intelligence is no longer a standard push over; it marginally increases its level of difficulty according to how well you perform in your races, thus always allowing you to develop properly as a racer. A feature that is becoming more popular in racing games, the flashback and rewind feature, has been added to game-play in GRID 2. This feature allows you to correct any major mistake and focus on what is most important: driving at the limit. One final feature that was an interesting add to game-play was the True Feel Handling System, which offers real-life physics application to simulate the realistic drive ability of any vehicle, making game-play approachable, yet challenging to master overnight.

Sebastian is an amateur blogger, car affectionado and casual gamer. Driving and racing simulations have always been his go-to games after a hard days work.

Humble Bundle Weekly Sale Offers Pay What You Want DRM-Free Games Every Week

1

Category : Featured, Game On, Indie, Linux, Mac, PC, Steam, Windows, Xbox

Gamers who appreciate a good deal, DRM-free gameplay or indie games are already familiar with Humble Bundle. The Humble Indie Bundle was created as a way to feature independent games and offer consumers a way to purchase games while doing good. Arguably the best value in gaming, Humble Bundles often bundle multiple game titles for gamers to purchase by setting their own price. Humble Bundle sets pricing level suggestions that allow for additional content bonuses, but does not pressure consumers into paying more. Not only can consumers benefit from a great deal, they can feel good about their purchase, as Humble Bundle allows consumers to determine how much of their purchase price is paid directly to the game developers, Humble Bundle for hosting and processing, and select charities.

This week, Humble Bundle launched their first Humble Bundle Weekly Sale! Each Tuesday, Humble Bundle will offer a new game for sale using their pay what you want model and providing the same distribution model to allow funding to be split among the game developers, Humble Bundle and the selected charities.

What better way to start the weekly sale than to feature a critically acclaimed game? For the first Humble Bundle Weekly Sale, Humble Bundle teamed up with Supergiant Games to feature Bastion! Bastion is an action-RPG game that allows players to take on the role of a kid who is tasked with restoring the world after the Calamity wrecks it. With remarkable 2D painted artwork, varied gameplay and an immersive soundtrack, Bastion earned much praise and many awards, including the Game Critics Award for Best Downloadable Game of E3 2011.

To purchase Bastion and for more information about this week’s deal and the additional content available, visit the website at HumbleBundle.com/weekly. Don’t forget to bookmark the site as new deals will be revealed every Tuesday.

Why more people need to think like Cevat Yerli

1

Category : Featured, Game On

Likely, you are asking, “Who is Cevat Yerli?” You know him better as “the guy who founded Crytek,” famed Crysis developer. Why do more people need to think like him? Well, in an era of hype and metacritic scores being the end all be all, Cevat brings a new perspective – One I’ve personally had for quite some time while reviewing games, or any media really.

Courtesy of CrytekCourtesy of Crytek

In a recent GameSpot interview, Cevat says Crysis 3 is better than the previous two installments in “every way.” You know what? He’s right. The graphics, control, and story are all miles better than Crysis and Crysis 2. However, it is currently sitting at a respectable 81 on Metacritic, while Crysis is at 91 and Crysis 2 score at 86. Why is that? Well Cevat believes it is due to two factors: “Fatigue”, or basically a combination of higher expectations and a lot of the same from other games. This isn’t anything new, but the other part of his explanation is. He says because Crysis was so different from other console offerings, at the time, it received higher review scores. To be exact, he said:

“It was so different to others that the relative impact it created was so much more bigger than Crysis 2 or Crysis 3, so, for me, the relative impact that Crysis 3 has created is lower than what Crysis 1 did. But I would think at any level it’s better than Crysis 2, and it’s certainly still better than Crysis 1. People remember Crysis 1 much bigger than it was, because it had a high impact.”

The key phrase is “Relative Impact”. Basically, he is taking into account when and how the game was released and has no qualms about saying that I was not as good as the other 2 games, but it had a much greater impact. This recognition does not happen nearly often enough, either in the media, or in casual fan conversation.

A great example of this, is Final Fantasy 7. Many herald this as the “greatest” Final Fantasy game, others go so far as to hate it, crying “overrated.” However the reality is, we should look at it just like Cevat. Is it understandably better remembered because of when/how it was released? Absolutely. This is what put RPG’s, and Final Fantasy specifically, on the map for a much larger portion of this country. Final Fantasy gave people something new (3-D cut scenes) and was HUGELY influential in the continuation of the series. For that, it deserves a place in history. However, is it really “better” than 8/9/10 etc? No. Even ignoring graphics, which do not age well for any early 3-D psx game, it had a questionable story, (even by JRPG standards) same old battle system, even the materia system has been improved upon in later installments as well. By most measurable accounts, it was not as good as games that came later, but it did make a huge difference.

This also happens the other way around. Games are released with too much hype, or at a bad time, and get lost or receive less recognition, regardless of quality. An example of this is Fable. This game had so much hype and legitimately failed to live up to a lot of it. Looking at it now, the game stands up quite well – controls, battle system and story are all very good. To be fair, its not like it killed the series. Fable went on to have two successful sequels. I notice it often gets lost how good the original game was amid all the hype, and letdown because of it.

We all should be more careful in the future to make sure we take note of context when discussing quality of games. Don’t be afraid to separate the influential games from the good ones, they both deserve credit, just in the right context. Let’s not place games on pedestals for being “Great” when they are “Influential” and not let a “Great” game get trashed on because its not “Influential” enough.

PlayStation 2013 Meeting – Live Blog

1

Category : Featured, Game On, Product Announcements

Over the last few weeks, rumors have been floating around the internet and gamers have been speculating what exactly Sony would announce in tonight’s announcement. Andrew House, President & Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment took the stage to open PlayStation’s 2013 Meeting to assure the audience the gamer is the focal point of the new development. Promising a vision of the future that is “consumer-centric, developer-inspired and characterized by an unwaivering commitment to phenomenal play experiences.”

Sony is committed to the PS Vita and is taking steps to continue developing for the handheld device and creating opportunities for integrating it into the Sony network. The news we have all been waiting for is now official – PlayStation 4 is a reality.

Mark Cerny took over to remind us of the limitations of current consoles and the development which has lead to this next-gen console. Touting the PS4 as a system made by “game creators for game creators.” Of course, the PS4 has improved hardware, including 8GB of high-speed unified memory in conjunction with the local hard drive we are all accustomed to.

What would a new console be without new peripherals? Those leaked images of the new PlayStation controller were accurate. With increased rumble sensation, an integrated “Share” button, built-in headphone jack and a small touch-pad, the new dual-shock controller was designed to work more seamlessly with the new console.

“Simple. Immediate. Social. Integrated. Personalized.” These are the principles behind the development of the PS4. Sony hopes the new console will encourage shared social experiences and learn more about the individual users tastes and uses to enable it to predict what the user will want in an effort to decrease download time by allowing content to pre-load.

It seems second screen compatibility is all the rage. With PS4 and PS Vita, remote play will allow players to take their game on the go and continue their play. Sony is ambitious here, hoping to be able to run all PS4 games on the Vita handheld. On the downside, PS3 games will not be playable on the new console natively. However, they are looking ahead to make the entire PlayStation catalog available in the future through the use of new technology in conjunction with PlayStation Network cloud services. Thinking outside of the proverbial box, PlayStation wants to make their games available on a myriad of devices, not just the PS4, PS3 and PS Vita, but tablets, smartphones, smart televisions and more.

Sony is an entertainment company after all, so it is hardly surprising that the PlayStation will include partnerships to provide entertainment content. Among the content partnerships are Hulu, Netflix, Amazon, Vudu, EPIX, Crunchyroll and more.

As far as games…

Guerilla Games announced the next installment of Killzone, with gameplay footage from Killzone: Shadow Fall.

Game Review – Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective, Nintendo DS

1

Category : Featured, Game On, Nintendo, Reviews

I just happen to stumble across one of the best games I’ve played in a long time. Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective. Yes it sounds a little crazy, and in truth it is, however this game was fun, innovative, original, and walks the fine line of humor/drama amazingly well.

The setup is this, you start of the game “waking up” after being killed. You are then treated to one of the better tutorial levels I’ve seen. It’s informative but at the same time it doesn’t have nearly as much of that “yes yes yes I get it lets move on” as most games do. Don’t get me wrong, it is still there, but not as much. Now this is coming from someone who loves origin stories so the fact that the tutorial is explaining how all the powers work may have something to do with my opinion on this, so your mileage may vary, but I found it enjoyable. Essentially you can “jump” from one object to another over a predetermined distance, and on occasion you can interact, or what the game calls performing a “ghost trick” on the item. So using the first level as an example, you have to get up a pile of junk, but only have a few items that you are allowed to jump into, one is a folding cot, which you jump into, and then unfold in order to get closer to the next item that you can jump into.

The other part of your abilities, and the main draw of the game for me, is that if you find a body, you can jump into it and go back to 4 min before their death. This allows you to both see what happened to them, which gives you more plot, and you are able to try and alter their fate by using your ghost tricks. The nice thing about this is although there is some trial and error, the game does have a halfway point that you can restart at instead of going back to the beginning, and throughout the game there was really one one point where I got frustrated, and that was solely because that apparently in the world of japan a bullet is shaped like this guys hat:

instead of this:

Which, when the goal of the scene is to find something the same shape as a bullet, is quite annoying.

Probably the most important thing to know going into this is the choice of items you can jump into is very arbitrary. Basically the game says “only some objects have cores, which are what allow you to jump into them” but that is all the explanation that you get, which is fine with me but I know some people may be looking for more on that front, I advise you, don’t. Its much more fun that way.

The plot of the game is for you to find out who you were and how/why you died. A straightforward sounding trip, however this one is filled with so many twists and turns that you get a bit dizzy. These turns range from partially obvious to well crafted surprises. Many times I found my self knowing in general what the next twist would be, but not the specifics, like in a horror movie when you know the mystery killer is actually one of the kids, but you don’t know which one or why. My best advice to you is to see this one through to the end, which I found to be amazingly rewarding and well worth it. In addition to this the cast of characters is…. interesting, but in a good way, most of the main characters are somewhat normal with just some random quirks, but then you have some odd balls, such as the smooth dancing inspector and the junkyard superintendent w/the pet pigeon. All these characters, although weird, still somehow seem to fit in the story and don’t seem that out of place so it’s not as jarring as it sounds.

As far as the game play portion of that journey, it’s almost all good. You have two ways to control everything, stylus or traditional buttons and both are always active so you can mix/match, which is what I did. You have two worlds to navigate, the real world, which you can slide the screen around to get a better view with either the stylus or d-pad, and the ghost world, which stays locked on you, but is where you can see what cores are around for you to jump to, again by using the d-pad to “reach” in the direction your pushing, or drawing a line with the stylus, which is sometimes required to reach certain cores that are behind another core. In this ghost world the top screen shows a picture of the item you are in and what, if anything, you can “trick” it into doing. This may have been my favorite part, because in many puzzle/adventure games half the game is figuring out what items are useful and what ones aren’t and this tells you right away if its just a stepping stone or useful item.

Now this is a type of game I do normally enjoy but end up using a walk-through for most of it just because I’ll become impatient with the trial and error nature of the puzzles, however this game does a great job of guiding you but not hand-holding you. Now if you are a hardcore Myst fan you may have a different opinion, but for me this was the perfect middle ground of difficulty and I only resorted to a walk-through once, for the above mentioned “lost in translation” moment.

As far as graphics and sound, they are both good. The music, although good, is limited to only 2 or 3 tracks, and as nice as they are, do get a bit repetitive after a while, whereas the sound effects just seemed to fit perfectly with the game. The graphics are colorful, and clear, on par with most recent DS offerings. I thought it was a little odd that the top screen of the DS, which from what I understand does have slightly better resolution, was only used for the item info and not for any of the few cinematic scenes in the game, but it didn’t seem to suffer for it.

Now, as far as replayablity…this I’m not sure on. As much as I loved the story that was told, because so much of it is based on not knowing what was going on, it does loose some replay value there, and the game doesn’t offer anything new a 2nd time around from what I understand. But it was definitely worth a play through, and who knows I may change my mind in a year and want to play it again.

Fun factor? Through the roof. And this game is a perfect example of why I want this in my reviews. I can’t really explain how a puzzle/adventure game is this much fun. But it is.

As mentioned above, the learning curve on this game is also excellent, it leads you along nicely, similar to Portal but at a much faster pace, that still works. You never really feel left behind, however some hard core adventure fans may find this too slow or too easy.

Overall here’s what we got, scale of 1-10:

- Graphics-8/10- Good solid colorful graphics, Ghost effects are simple but just plain work and look right, some anime/Japanese flair but not overly done in that style.

- Sound-7/10 not bad but not quite enough variety in the soundtrack. Appropriate sound effects.

- Gameplay- 9/10 It works 90% of the time exactly as you ask it to, and is very intuitive and easy to figure out.

- Replayability- 5/10- this is all down to personal preference, the game offers nothing new, and due to the nature of the plot being surprise heavy, its tough to nail this down. Basically, if you can re-watch movies like The Game, or Sixth Sense then you can replay this game.

- Learning Curve 9/10- one of the few games to get this right, although the final end of the curve may not be high enough for some, the gradual climb is perfect for those of us who never could get through Myst.

- Fun Factor 9/10- It just is. The combo of time travel, twisting plot, innovative controls/concept. They all come together in a great package.

Now, a brief note on my overall scoring, it will not always be an average of the above because I don’t think its a fair system, just because the sound is bad doesn’t always bring a 9/10 game down to 7 or 8, sometimes its still 9/10 even with bad sound.

Overall 9/10- Fun, great story, good gameplay, total package. If you have any interest in an adventure type game, but have had problems with other entries, try this one out.
